Farnley Estate WI Monthly Programme 2024

Unless otherwise stated all meetings are at Leathley Village Hall (LS21 1LD, ///artist.numeral.trucks) on the 2nd Wednesday  of the month at 7.30pm. (Download a copy of our programme here).

The Walking Group meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month in the morning. Details of the walk are circulated at the prior WI meeting for that month. There is no walk in December.

Besides the regular meetings outlined below we are also planning a guided visit to Farnley Hall.

January

Wednesday 10th: Sir John Barran and Roundhay Park. One of our members, the great great granddaughter of Sir John Barran, will tell us about this important gift to the citizens of Leeds. We will make our choice of the resolution to be considered at the National Federation of WIs Annual Meeting at the Albert Hall in June. If it is passed at that meeting it will become a national campaign. The short list from which we shall vote ranges from dental health to gambling, from poor housing to the conditions for women in the criminal justice system.

Wednesday 24th: Walking group visit to Roundhay Park.

February

Wednesday 14th: Kitchen equipment you didn’t know you needed. Airfryers big and small; plus the Remoska oven.

March

Wednesday 13th:.'Like Nana Did' with Jo Lyons. Jo will talk about setting up and running an eco-friendly, minimal packaging shop in Otley. Tucked away in Orchard Court between the bus station and Newgate, this small shop is a treasure trove. Don't forget to take your own containers for foodstuffs and more

Wednesday 27th: Walking group.

April

Wednesday 10th: Investigating Basketry with Fiona Arnold. A talk and opportunity to bring your own baskets to examine with a local  expert.

Wednesday 24th: Walking group.

May

Wednesday 8th: at 7 pm (note the earlier time). Visit to the Appletrees Flock. A local trip to appreciate the work of a diverse smallholding and meet its owners. Watch out for details. There should be new lambs and spring flowers to enjoy.

Wednesday 22nd: Walking group.

June

Wednesday 12th: Behind the scenes with Courtyard Planters. Katie Burnett tells of establishing and running an environmentally conscious nursery. She will have plants for sale.  Courtyard Planters is on Beech Hill in Otley (just past the Black Horse traffic lights on the road out to Menston) and has a range of seasonal  gifts as well as lovely plants.

Wednesday 26th: Walking group.

July

Wednesday 10th: Come and try Croquet. A visit to a member’s garden to have a go at this game.

Wednesday 24th: Walking group.

August

Wednesday 14th: Horticap: The work of a charity providing training in horticulture and other skills for those with learning difficulties.

Wednesday 28th: Walking group visit to Horticap’s cafĂ© and a walk nearby.

September

Wednesday 11th: Are you a strong lass? Author Kath Padgett recounts tales of Yorkshire classrooms of the 1970s.

Wednesday 25th: Walking group.

October

Wednesday 9th: Annual meeting and social evening. A chance to get to know other members, see our scrapbooks, share craft successes, find help with the less successful projects, sell produce and enjoy a faith supper.

Wednesday 23rd: Walking group.

November

Wednesday 13th: Hand-crafted polymer clay jewellery demonstration with Amy from Make Harrogate. Gifts for sale.

December

Wednesday 11th: Decorate a traditional wreath with local creators Liz and Sally. Bring your choice of decorations if you wish.
