NFWI Memorandum - Afghanistan

9 Sept 2021 from Emma Holland-Lindsay Head of Public Affairs

Dear all,

I am writing to make you aware of the action NFWI is taking in response to the developing situation in Afghanistan as we have had a number of contacts from members on this issue. Please cascade this information to WIs in your federation.

We are deeply concerned about the situation in Afghanistan and particularly about the very real threats to the safety of women. We stand in solidarity with those calling on the international community not to turn their backs on the women and girls of Afghanistan. We are urging the UK Government to do everything in its power to protect the Afghan people, particularly women and girls.

The NFWI has been in contact with other charities and NGOs working in Afghanistan or to support women and girls affected about ways that we can add value to their efforts. We have also fed the views of members into ACWW so that they can raise these on our behalf where relevant.

Members who wish to support calls for the UK government to take action can do the following:

·         Sign this petition which calls for a range of actions to protect the freedom of Afghan women and girls https://chng.it/fzwCFYZ5v

·         Write to their MP asking them to push the government for action to support women and girls. A draft letter you can send to your MP is attached to this email.

We are aware that many members will also want to take practical action to support refugees who have been resettled in the UK. We have therefore collated a list of organisations working in this field that are asking for support from the public. This list can be found at the following link:

https://www.thewi.org.uk/campaigns/news-and-events/take-action-on-afghanistan

The usual guidelines on WI fundraising activity continue to apply so please do consult the guidance on My WI before taking part in any charitable appeals within your federation or WI.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please get in touch with the Public Affairs Department via email (pa@nfwi.org.uk) or phone (020 7371 9300 ext. 2002). Please note the Department’s new phone extension.

Gift Aid

Your Secretaries will have received a lot of information on Gift Aid from NFWI. Does your WI do Gift Aid? If it does you will have to go back to your members with all the new information and ask them if they still want to do it as it is significantly different and not so beneficial for individual Wis. Members need to know if they are Income Tax payers and if they already Gift Aid to other organisations ie. National Trust, Royal British Legion etc before completing the New Gift Aid Declaration.

WI Subscription Flexibility

The subscription from April 2021 to March 2022 is £44, of which £12.10 (27.5%) goes to the NFWI, £10.30 (23.4%) to the Federation, and £21.60 (49.1%) to the WI. This means the minimum amount to be collected from each member in April 2021 is £22.40 (NFWI+ Federation) and WIs have flexibility over charging the remaining £21.60.

Please bear with us, we are doing all we can, within the Government Guidelines and are preparing our programme behind the scenes to open up as soon as we are allowed.

In order to do this we now need Committees to discuss the above ‘Subscription Flexibility Guidance’ and make your own informed decisions. The attached communications from NFWI will provide you with further information and answer any questions you may have. We hope you feel as inspired as we do by this initiative and that this will help us all to retain as many members as possible. Covid 19 has caused so many problems and such heartache for so many, we need to get back together as women united in the most wonderful women’s organisation in the world.

Once you have collected your subscriptions please send them to Alma House as soon as possible using the attached form.
